Why do florists in Massachusetts have to worry about a Volcano in Iceland?

19 April, 2010

There have been several news reports about how the Icelandic Volcano is effecting air travel and causing a major inconvenience to travelers. We know that some of the Elite runners were not able to get to the Boston Marathon but did you know that the Volcano has caused a glitch in the supply chain for local florists? Don’t worry you will still be able to get that wristlet for the dance on Friday and the bouquet you ordered for Secretaries Day will still arrive on Wednesday.
Flowers are sourced from all over the world: Holland, Columbia, Israel, Ecuador and right here in the US. So fear not your local flower shop is still stocked with plenty of fresh varieties of cut flowers they just might not be from European sources for the next few weeks. As a matter of fact there is a grower that Nunans just started using that grows their flowers right here in Massachusetts. Hydro Harvest, located in Ashby MA, grows specialty cut flowers. Skip (the owner) grows delphinium, alstroemeria, snapdragon and a few novelty blooms; he grows the flowers, cuts them, conditions them, loads them onto his truck and delivers them to local shops.
The power of nature is spectacular to behold, just ask anyone who has seen the pictures of the erupting volcano. The beauty of nature is easy to behold when you visit your local flower shop and gaze into the face of a fresh cut flower. Don’t let the Volcano get you down but if it does stop in and pick up a few cut flowers.
